Botox
What is Botox?
This is the trademark for Botulinum toxin (Botox). Botox injections have been used now for two decades in children and adults to improve muscle spasm of facial muscles. Botulinum toxin has also been useful to correct double vision due to muscle imbalance in the eye. Injection of minor amounts, weaken the muscle and prevents their untoward affects such as frown lines, crows feet and expression lines.
How does it work?
When we use our facial muscles, for example, to laugh or smile, the skin overlying these muscles becomes creased. As we get older changes to our skin through the ageing process cause these creases to become permanent. Botulinum toxin works by blocking the chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle so that the muscle becomes temporally weakened. As a result the skin overlying these facial muscles will appear smoother and the wrinkles softened.
How fast will I see results from Botox?
Improvement in injected areas will occur within 2-3 days. Maximum effect will occur within two weeks. Please note that Botox is used to reduce lines caused by muscle contraction. Lines that are visible when your muscles are relaxed may be softened, but will still be visible. Continued treatments will assist in softening those areas further.
Does Botox paralyze muscles?
The term paralysis suggests a permanent loss of movement resulting from injury to a nerve or muscle. Botox blocks the ability of the stimulating nerve to cause contraction of the injected muscle. This does not result in permanent muscle injury or paralysis. It does reduce or substantially eliminate the ability of this injected muscle to contract and produce overlying skin wrinkles. This effect is transient and generally lasts about 3 to 6 months.
How long will Botox last?
Improvement in line reduction will be seen for 3-6 months, and may last longer in certain individuals. We recommend re-treatment with Botox every three (3) months to maintain the maximum desired affect. Desired effects last longer with consistent, continued use.
What are Botox indications?
Botox is indicated for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe lines associated with facial muscle activity in adult 18- 65 years.
What are Botox contraindications?
Botox is contraindicated in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known allergies to any ingredient in the formula. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.
